These are the assignments to be completed by 8th grade students during the third quarter of the 2012-2013 school year. When updating their ePortfolio sites, students need to make sure that their writing is interesting to read and appropriate for their grade level. All grammar and spelling should be correct and should be at least a paragraph in length, unless told otherwise. Many of these assignments could be completed at home, if needed. Student will need Internet access and may need access to the programs listed below in order to complete the assignments.

In order to transfer completed work between home and school, the student would need access to the Internet and would need to log in to Edmodo and upload files to their library. Files uploaded to the student's library could then be downloaded to their computer at school and turned in for grading.

Ignition

Students will complete the final 4 modules in Ignition to review Digital Literacy and Responsibilities. This program is divided into 7 modules covering topics including: Digital footprint, Secure identity, Cyberbullying, Good texting practices, Conducting online research, Digital time management, Creating multimedia products, and Careers in technology

Internet Resources and Credibility
  1. Student will complete the Internet Resources and Credibility module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
  2. Student create a Quarter 3 post for Ignition on their Google Site which includes:
    • An introductory sentence (or two) that links back to the 2nd quarter post about Ignition. This should be separate from the paragraph about Internet Resources and Credibility.
    • A paragraph for Internet Resources and Credibility which answers the following questions:
      • What does it mean to plagiarize, and what are some ways that people can make sure they are NOT plagiarizing?
      • What are the consequences of plagiarism?
      • How do you use technology in our schoolwork? When does technology use cause a problem in school?
Creating Multimedia Products
  1. Student will complete the Creating Multimedia Products module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
  2. Student will add a paragraph for Creating Multimedia Products to the Ignition post on their Google Site which answers the following questions:
    • How can technology help people to be creative and express their ideas?
    • What have you done with technology to be creative and express your ideas? (no links, please)
    • Why do people need to be careful about what they share or post online?
    • What is the purpose of copyright and what are some examples of copyright infringement?
Digital Relationships and Respect
  1. Student will complete the Digital Relationships and Respect module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
  2. Student will add a paragraph for Digital Relationships and Respect to the Ignition post on their Google Site which answers the following questions:
    • What is cyberbullying and how is it different than regular bullying?
    • What should someone do if they are cyberbullied?
    • What can you do if someone you know is being cyberbullied?
    • How can people your age help to put an end to cyberbullying?
The Future of Technology and You
  1. Student will complete the Future of Technology module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
  2. Student will add a paragraph for The Future of Technology and You to the Ignition post on their Google Site which answers the following questions:
    • What is STEM?
    • What are some STEM careers and why are they important?
    • What are some jobs that have been created because of technology?
    • If you wanted to get a job in technology in the future, what could you be doing now to help plan for that?
My Digital Life
  1. Student will complete the My Digital Life Simulation in Ignition.
  2. Student will add a wrap up paragraph to the Ignition post on their Google Site with their reflections on Ignition. The student's reflection needs to include:
    • What they liked and/or didn't like about this assignment and why.
    • What they learned from the assignment and how it may change their interactions with technology in the future or if it won't change anything, why it won't.
    • What they feel was the most valuable module (or modules) and why.
    • The student's Ignition certified badge.

How to Turn In: Student will turn in the link to their Google Site post on Edmodo.

Can this be completed at home?
While this could be completed at home if a student has access to the Internet, it is preferable that these assignments are completed at school.

Pixton Comic

  1. Student will log in to Edmodo and use the Pixton app to create a comic to educate others about something they learned (or were reminded of) while completing the Ignition modules. This should be some aspect of Digital Literacy and Responsibility that they feel is important that their peers and younger students should know.
    • The comic must be at least 4 panels in length. Use The Classic OR Sunday Funny OR 4-Koma layout option.
    • The comic must be appropriate for students in grades 4-8.
    • The comic must educate on some aspect of Digital Literacy and Responsibility.
    • The comic should educate using some kind of storyline and not just a character stating facts.
  2. When the comic is complete, student will Save and Submit and make sure the comic has a title. Student should NOT select an assignment when submitting.
  3. Student will download their comic in to their folder naming it 8th-FirstName-Ignition.
  4. Student will add a post to their Google Site in the 3rd Quarter for the Pixton Comic using Insert / Image to add their comic to the post. Remember, posts on your Google Site always include a paragraph describing the assignment and any tools used to complete it, the embedded work that you did, and a paragraph reflecting on what you liked (or didn't like) about the assignment and why and what you learned from it.

How to Turn In: Student will turn in a link to their post on their Google Site on Edmodo.

Can this be completed at home?
If a student has access to the Internet at home, this assignment can be completed at home.

Keyboarding Speed Tests

  1. Student will open their Average Speed Worksheet in Excel.
  2. Student will add a column to the worksheet for this series of tests that will calculate their average for the day. The easiest way to do this is to:
    • Click on the "B" for Column B to select the entire column
    • Click on Copy icon (2 sheets of paper icon in the toolbar on the upper-left)
    • Click on the "C" for Column C and then click on the Paste icon (clipboard icon in the toolbar on the upper-left)
    • Remove all scores from the speed tests (C3-C7) since you're redoing these. Do NOT remove the formula for the average in C8 - it will show as an error but leave this!
    • Change "Starting Calculated Speed" in C2 to Speed as of Today's Date (do not type "Today's Date", type in the current date; ie., 3/15)
    • If you never entered your name, do that now, too!
  3. Student will take all five speed tests. Student may take each test twice and then record the best of the two CALCULATED speeds! The time starts when you start typing and you can use the backspace key to correct mistakes on these tests and you should try to correct your mistakes!

How to Turn In:
Student will send Mrs. Sedgwick a message on Edmodo when they are done and attach their spreadsheet (by clicking on File) to the message.

Can this be completed at home?
If a student has access to the Internet and to Microsoft Excel, this can be completed at home:
  • Student will upload their current Average Speed Worksheet to their backpack on Edmodo.
  • Student will download their worksheet at home and complete the speed tests.
  • Student will upload their completed worksheet to Edmodo into their backpack and use the Attach option to turn this in to Mrs. Sedgwick.
  • Once back at school, student will download their worksheet to their computer.

If a student does not have Microsoft Excel at home or did not upload their Average Speed Worksheet to Edmodo, they can take the typing tests at home if they have access to the Internet. The student should write down their Calculated Speeds for each test and bring to class with them. Once back at school, they can complete step #2 above and add their scores and then turn in their worksheet.
